Position Overview:

The Senior Application Support Engineer provides monitoring and support operations for customer-facing applications. This position assists in all functions of maintaining a complex multi-tiered application which includes testing, implementation, and execution. This position will be responsible for overseeing production web and application performance, configuration and maintenance, application migrations, releases, incident response, and trouble resolution. This position assists in the formulation of internal procedures and best practices for execution, configuration, standardization, and support of the applications. This person evaluates, analyzes, and resolves complex technical problems for external customers. Participation in a team environment is heavily relied upon, as is the ability to work independently. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Strong Linux command line skills and network experience a must
  • Configuration, maintenance, monitoring and support of Linux web applications
  • Apache web server administration/configuration skills
  • Apache Tomcat administration/configuration/performance skills
  • Java-based web applications administration/configuration skills
  • Knowledgeable in relational database software and concepts, specifically Oracle, MYSQL, and Postgres
  • Experience with supporting Cloud and SaaS applications and SSO a definite advantage
  • Promotion and evangelization of DevOps best practices (CI, CD, automated testing, branching strategy, decoupling, etc…)
  • Simplification and improvement of software delivery/release processes
  • Support cloud-based solutions by building and managing infrastructures in AWS
  • Monitor and fix issues identified or reported
  • Minor development for internal services and automation needs
  • Interactions with development teams for task scheduling, clarification, and implementation
  • Participate in production incident resolution

Qualifications

  • BSc/MSc degree in the field of computer science is preferred, otherwise equivalent experience is expected

  • 5+ years of work experience as a Systems Administrator/DevOps supporting development teams preferred

  • Ability to work off hours as needed with call rotation schedule

  • Excellent understanding of SDLC, patching, releases and software development at scale

  • Good understanding of enterprise standards and enterprise building principles

  • In-depth knowledge in Linux OS; Experience with Bastion Host

  • Theoretical and practical skills in Web-environments based on Java technologies, e.g. Tomcat, Jetty, JBoss

  • Strong scripting skills in one or any combination of bash or Perl preferred by will also consider python, ruby

  • Experience with AWS required

  • Experience with CI Tools such as Jenkins

  • Excellent knowledge of Continuous Integration and Delivery approaches

Preferred skills:

  • Good knowledge of a configuration management tool like Ansible, Packer.

  • Good knowledge of cloud infrastructures orchestration tools like CloudFormation or Terraform.

  • Basic knowledge of software delivery orchestration tools like Spinnaker, GoCD, Jenkins Pipelines, Nolio, IBM UberCode.

  • Good understanding of enterprise search technologies, such as Elastic Search, Lucene, Solr is a plus
