Who we are:
The purpose of RooT (Reclaiming Our Own Transcendence) is to address this sexual, emotional, and physical abuse by abusers with political, economic, and social clout by:
- Creating a structured space for accountability and restitution to take place through a restorative justice approach.
- Training community members in the process of facilitating the RJ process.
- Supporting the development of RJ structures of accountability within institutions, organizations, or other community groups, lead by representatives of those most susceptible to abuse within the community (i.e. students within an academic institution).
- Offering focused sensitivity training for those who take up positions of power and influence in academic, cultural, religious, and other community institutions so that they can:
- recognize ways they might potentially abuse their power to undermine or hurt
community members within their professional and personal lives,
- understand their responsibility in holding colleagues accountable when they witness any signs of abuse of power.
- Offering initiatives for survivors to engage in a healing process.
- Offering healing groups for perpetrators to shift learned attitudes that enable and perpetuate abusive behavior.
- Offering a political education program for the local community on understanding the effects of sexual, emotional, and physical abuse, and how to respond to signs of abuse.
