Indirect Tax Senior Manager, SUT & VAT

Palo Alto, CA, US Posted Jun 6, 2026

About Whop  Whop is building the default operating system for internet commerce. Our mission is to help people earn income online by giving creators, solopreneurs, communities, and internet-native businesses the tools to sell digital products, software, access, services, and memberships at scale.

From paid communities and trading tools to SaaS products, educational content, and exclusive access, Whop powers a new generation of online businesses. We are highly product-driven, intensely customer-obsessed, and move with urgency. We care deeply about building great systems, hiring exceptional people, and creating leverage for the entrepreneurs who rely on us.

The Role  We’re looking for an Indirect Tax Senior Manager to partner closely with the business and ensure Whop’s compliance across sales & use tax, VAT, and other indirect or transactional tax obligations as the company grows in scale, complexity, and global reach.

This role reports directly to the Director of Tax and supports the execution and scaling of Whop’s global indirect tax strategy. As an early member of the tax team, you will play a key role in shaping how Whop approaches indirect taxation across products, jurisdictions, and emerging business models.

You will work closely with the Director of Tax to define and operationalize tax strategy for product launches and iterations, stay current on U.S. and global indirect tax developments, perform nexus and exposure analysis, support registrations, evaluate product and service taxability, advise on marketplace facilitator rules, and navigate evolving digital services and transaction tax regimes.

What You'll Do

  • Own indirect tax compliance
Ensure accurate compliance across all relevant jurisdictions, including U.S. sales & use tax and international VAT regimes. This includes managing nexus analysis, registrations, filings, and reconciliations, while staying ahead of regulatory changes and evolving product and service taxability rules.
  • Partner with Engineering on tax systems
Collaborate with Engineering to design, implement, and optimize indirect tax automation, data flows, and reporting infrastructure.
  • Support international expansion
Advise on indirect tax implications of entering new markets, including OSS, IOSS, DST, and other emerging or similar regimes, ensuring compliant and scalable expansion into new jurisdictions.
  • Manage audits and controversy
Support and manage indirect tax audits, notices, and inquiries with a practical, risk-based approach. Coordinate with external advisors as needed to resolve issues efficiently and mitigate exposure.
  • Own customer indirect tax inquiries
Act as a point of contact for customer inquiries related to indirect tax, including sales & use tax, VAT, product taxability, and other compliance-related questions, ensuring timely and accurate responses.
  • Drive process improvement and scalability
Build and document scalable processes, controls, and workflows that support Whop’s growth in transaction volume, jurisdictions, and product complexity.

Who You Are

  • 8+ years of experience in indirect tax, with deep hands-on expertise in U.S. sales & use tax and international indirect tax
  • Strong understanding of marketplace facilitator laws, digital product taxability, and platform business models
  • Experience with tax automation platforms
  • Familiarity with international indirect tax regimes, including EU VAT, OSS/IOSS, UK VAT, and digital services taxes
  • Proven ability to manage multi-jurisdiction compliance programs, including registrations, filings, and audits
  • Comfortable working cross-functionally with Finance, Legal, Product, and Engineering to evaluate and address indirect tax implications
  • Excellent communicator who can simplify complex indirect tax concepts for non-tax stakeholders
  • CPA, MST, JD, or LLM preferred, or equivalent academic and professional background in tax or a related field.
