The Illustration and Design Program Manager ensures consistency in quality of print and online designs by overseeing and approving all work produced in-house and externally.
- Responsible for conceptualizing scientific research into innovative ideas and advances by creating illustrations and designs for multiple platforms.
- Manages the illustration and design department, assesses creative and functional needs, delegates work to direct reports, seeks and supervises external help when necessary.
- Collaborates across multiple departments to implement new commercial and web ideas.
- Manages the staff working in the design and illustration department
- Supports the recruitment, training, and motivation of staff to achieve the objectives of the design and Illustration department.
- Contributes to formal review by setting departmental and individual targets and reviewing performance fairly and efficiently.
- Creates and implements annual department strategies in accordance with overall Cell Press strategic objectives.
- Arranges and executes effective training programs for Cell Press staff to assist with artistic needs.
- Ensures timely communication with design and illustration staff on company policy, new and emerging projects, and opportunities for interdepartmental collaboration.
- Promotes timely and effective communication between the design and illustration department, production, and editorial departments.
- Manages changes to staff and accommodates projects effectively by assessing workload, delegating accordingly, and seeking out and managing external help.
- Ensures department members have proper equipment. Establishes and maintains design and illustration branding standards for Cell Press.
- Establishes guidelines for use of company logos and branding. Evolves those guidelines as Cell Press introduces new products.
- Reviews and approves in-house and external design work to ensure consistent representation of Cell Press content.
- Champions a consistent and adaptable illustration style for all in-house artwork.
- Researches current trends in scientific communication and gathers data that will assist Cell Press with identifying new technologies and opportunities.
- Creates illustrations.
- Collaborates with editors to conceptualize and execute illustrations from authors rough sketches or electronic files.
- Concept development for illustrations when the author of an article has not provided suggestions.
- Investigates and implements new types of illustrative content that could appear in Cell Press journals or homepages.
- Creates design for Cell Press
- Collaborates with editorial, operations and marketing departments to design new journals according to established brand guidelines.
- Identifies and coordinates the design needs of new design projects and initiatives by collaborating with project stakeholders to define scope of work.
- Collaborates with sales team on new product design to ensure consistent branding.
- Assists senior leadership with journal-related design decision making by creating prototypes upon request.
- Provides ideas and designs for the web production team.
- Creates formal guidelines for implementation of existing and new product designs.
General Knowledge and Technical Skills
- Solid understanding of web- and print-based design elements and principles
- Strong visualization skills to transform complex scientific information into 2- or 3D images
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Experience with project management and streamlining techniques
- Strong understanding of science in order to conceptualize scientific ideas
- Detail-oriented, with attention to quality and accuracy
- Knowledge of cutting-edge technologies in art and design fields required
Education and Experience
- Bachelors degree in art required
- Strong experience with Adobe Design suite required
- Strong experience with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Expert understanding of typography, branding, color theory
- Experience with managing and developing a team of direct reports
