About the role
Shopify Payments processes billions of dollars for millions of merchants across 175 countries, and this role helps keep that money safe. As a Credit Risk Analyst, you'll investigate merchants on our payments gateway, applying your team's playbooks and judgment to catch credit risk before it turns into financial loss — without slowing legitimate businesses down.
This is hands-on analytical work: digging into merchant behavior and transaction patterns, documenting findings clearly for technical and non-technical audiences, and using AI tools to sharpen your analysis. You'll learn from experienced teammates and steadily build deep expertise in credit risk and emerging commerce threats.
Commerce moves fast and bad actors get creative, so curiosity, speed, and accuracy matter. If you want to start or grow a credit risk career where your work directly protects merchants at global scale, this is it.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor trends across your caseload to identify systemic risks and act quickly to prevent merchant credit risk losses
- Assess how business model characteristics, seasonal patterns, and economic conditions affect merchant risk profiles
- Communicate directly with merchants to address concerns, gather information, and explain decisions in plain language
- Surface merchant and risk insights to cross-functional partners so your casework feeds into how Shopify's risk tools evolve
- Follow your team's playbooks — and improve them as you spot gaps or better ways to work
- Apply AI tools to detect threats faster and automate the repetitive parts of analysis
- Track emerging risk patterns and industry trends, and flag them so the team can sharpen detection rules
- Build deep knowledge of current and emerging credit risk threats across your domain
- Mentor newer teammates and raise the bar on quality across investigations
- Take ownership of the quality of your own work and the outcomes that follow
Qualifications
- 1+ years of experience in risk analysis, underwriting, payments, e-commerce, or a related analytical role
- Solid understanding of merchant credit risk concepts and the ability to connect scattered data points into a clear picture
- Strong written and verbal communication skills — you can explain a complex situation in plain language to any audience
- Comfort working in ambiguity where the playbook doesn't always have the answer and you need to apply good judgement
- Curiosity about different business models and the risk profiles they carry
- Working knowledge of chargeback basics: root causes, money movement, and common mitigation techniques
- Proficiency with spreadsheet tools like Google Sheets or Excel
- A growth mindset — you treat feedback as fuel and constantly look for ways to sharpen your craft
Nice to have
- Exposure to SQL or a genuine interest in learning to pull and analyze your own data
- Experience using AI tools to speed up analysis or automate workflows
- Background in financial services or worked in a fintech environment
- Knowledge of high risk business models such as pre-sales, dropshipping, or subscriptions
- Experience contributing to team documentation, playbooks, or knowledge bases
About Shopify
Opportunity is not evenly distributed. Shopify puts independence within reach for anyone with a dream to start a business. We propel entrepreneurs and enterprises to scale the heights of their potential. Since 2006, we’ve grown to over 8,300 employees and generated over $1 trillion in sales for millions of merchants in 175 countries.
This is life-defining work that directly impacts people’s lives as much as it transforms your own. This is putting the power of the few in the hands of the many, is a future with more voices rather than fewer, and is creating more choices instead of an elite option.
About you
Moving at our pace brings a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity—and a little bit of chaos. Shopifolk thrive on that and are comfortable being uncomfortable. That means Shopify is not the right place for everyone.
Before you apply, consider if you can:
- Care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone
- Excel by seeking professional and personal hypergrowth
- Keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)
- Be resilient and resourceful in face of ambiguity and thrive on (rather than endure) change
- Bring critical thought and opinion
- Put AI agents and tools to work on the tasks they're built for, and focus on the work only humans can do
- Embrace differences and disagreement to get shit done and move forward
- Work digital-first for your daily work
