What is Clackline?
Clackline is an original typing game that runs right in your browser. Every letter you type stands up a tile on the table. A few seconds in, the tiles behind you start to topple, one after another, in a chain that speeds up the longer you last. Your goal: keep typing ahead of it.
It's made for people who want typing games for adults, with real sentences, a real speed number and a challenge that keeps up with fast typists. Rounds take about a minute, the next one starts with one key, and your personal bests stay on this device. It's free, with no download, no account and no sign-up.
How to play
- The first correct letter starts the round. The first few words are a warm-up while Clackline measures your pace.
- Each right key stands the next tile. A wrong key doesn't move you forward: the tile flashes red, and you type the right letter to carry on.
- After the warm-up, the chain starts behind you a little slower than your pace and speeds up every second. Each mistake makes it lunge a few tiles closer.
- The small tiles next to Lead, above the table, show how far ahead of the chain you are. They tip over as it closes in and turn red when it is about to reach you.
- Some words are yellow. Type one with no mistakes and it becomes a brace that stops the chain for a moment when it gets there.
- Clean typing lifts your combo to ×2, ×3 and ×4, so each tile is worth more points. One wrong key resets it.
- When the chain catches your cursor, you'll see your level, speed, accuracy and points. Press Enter to play again.
Three ways to play
Classic is the main game. Each level is a 5 WPM step in the chain's speed, so reaching Level 12 means you stayed ahead of a chain going 70 words per minute.
The daily challenge is one short passage a day, the same for everyone. Type all five sentences before the chain catches you. Your first run counts, and replays are just for fun. Keep your streak going and copy a spoiler-free result to share.
Calm has no chain and no clock. Type a short passage at your own pace, then watch the whole table topple. It's a good warm-up, and a good choice if timers make typing harder for you.
In Settings you can pick Plain text (lowercase words), Real text (capitals and punctuation) or Pro text (adds numbers and symbols). Flawless mode ends a round on your first mistake. You can also pick a starting level, use bigger tiles, reduce motion or turn on sound.
Scoring, speed and levels
- Your speed is how many 5-character words you type correctly per minute (WPM). Paused time doesn't count.
- Accuracy is your correct key presses divided by all key presses. Every wrong key counts.
- Each tile is worth your current level times your combo in points. A brace that stops the chain adds 25 points times your level.
- Your level is the chain's speed, in 5 WPM steps.
Your top level, top points and top speed are saved in this browser.
What is a good typing speed?
An average typist types around 40 words per minute. 60 WPM or more is fast, and 100 WPM or more is very fast. Accuracy matters just as much: aim for 95 percent or higher, because every mistake costs time. In Clackline, the level you reach shows the speed you can hold under pressure.
Tips to type faster
- Keep your eyes on the screen, not on your hands.
- Read a word or two ahead while you type the current one.
- Keep a steady rhythm. Even typing beats bursts and stops.
- After two mistakes in a row, slow down a little. Clean typing builds speed.
- Treat yellow words as your moment to focus. A clean brace gives you time.
- A few short rounds every day help more than one long session.
Common questions
Do typing games actually help?
They can. Typing gets faster with lots of real typing and quick feedback on mistakes, and a game makes it easier to keep coming back. Clackline uses real sentences, stops on every mistake and shows your speed and accuracy after each round.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. Tap the table to open your phone's keyboard, then type. Clackline is made for a real keyboard, so you'll get the most out of it on a computer.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
It's free, with no download, no account and no sign-up. Your personal bests, settings and daily streak are saved in your browser on this device. Clearing your browser data resets them.
How is WPM counted?
One word is 5 characters, including spaces. Your speed is your correct characters divided by 5, divided by the minutes you played, not counting pauses.
Is there a mode without a timer?
Yes. Calm mode has no chain and no clock. You can also turn on bigger tiles and reduced motion in Settings.
